Missed a 990-N e-Postcard? No Worries!
Missing your Form 990-N deadline does not automatically mean your nonprofit is in trouble.
You may have read that the IRS assesses daily late-filing penalties against nonprofits. While those penalties can apply to certain Form 990 returns, the IRS does not impose a monetary late-filing penalty for Form 990-N.
However, a missed return should still be corrected as soon as possible.
Should I File a Missing 990-N?
Yes.
Even without a financial penalty, a missing filing can create problems for your organization. Donors, grantmakers, banks, and government agencies may review your nonprofit’s filing history when evaluating whether the organization is active, legitimate, and responsibly managed.
Missing filings may also complicate grant applications. Some public agencies and private foundations require current compliance records before awarding funds.
Most importantly, failing to complete the required annual filing for three consecutive years will result in the automatic loss of your organization’s federal tax-exempt status.
Can I File Form 990-N Through the IRS for Free?
It depends on the filing year.
The IRS offers a free e-Postcard system for organizations filing an available Form 990-N. However, older filing years may no longer be accepted through the IRS portal and may need to be submitted through an approved e-file provider.
That is where Pro990 can help.
Through Pro990, you can file eligible current or prior-year Form 990-N returns while also receiving free access to your nonprofit dashboard and annual courtesy filing reminders.
